Hi there, I'm Burke, and I am the creator of The Node World. I have been a web developer by hobby for over a decade, and just recently learned about the indie web movement! I went on a mission to make something that the Internet was missing, and it turned into this!

In the early 2000's, while I was just learning about how the web worked, I stumbled across a Flash app on Newgrounds.com called World of Words. I instantly fell in love, and shortly after started my adventure into learning Flash animating and programming.

In late 2020, Flash officially died, and World of Words shut down. The Node World is the re-birth of World of Words, and although it is quite a bit different, it shares two main concepts: an endless, navigable whiteboard with content, and an IRC style real-time chat.

I wanted to bring a privacy focused, creative space to the Internet with my indie movement project — and an HTML5, 2D world filled with photos, artwork and writing/literature fit the bill. There are no ads and there is no algorithm. Simply. . . explore as you wish.

While it does take more time in comparison to big networks like Facebook and Instagram — I hope you'll find it more peaceful and enjoyable to spend time being creative, rather than clicking the share button on Facebook. Your brain will thank you, I'm sure!

If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please feel free to use the contact form to reach me! I can typically reply quickly, however, I am still just a human. Please refrain from sending lots of messages before a reply — it won't make reply time faster. :)

Love Always,

Burke I. Zizzi

How To Navigate
▼ scroll as needed

There are three ways to move yourself throughout the world: click to drag panning, the navigation joystick and teleporting. There are also "quick-link" buttons to bring you to common areas: your saved bookmarks and the list of public, pre-set "hub locations."

Once you've started moving around, you'll likely notice that you are also able to zoom in and out. Zooming in and zooming out allows you to see more or less of what's around, and focus on what people have created. This is especially useful for text-based objects.

You'll also notice user nametags floating around the whiteboard. Your cursor is your name tag on the map. Your mouse movement is updated in real-time, and moves exactly as your mouse does. You'll always know when you cross paths with another member who's online!

Pan Moving: click-to-drag on an empty part of the whiteboard to move. Be sure not to click on an object, or you'll start to move it instead of yourself. You can hold the SHIFT key while you click to drag to ignore objects to avoid this problem.

Joystick Moving: on desktop, you'll notice a button in the top left corner that says "NAVIGATION." Clicking this will open a menu that shows a ball inside a graph — the joystick. Click-and-hold this joystick, and start to drag it in the direction you want to move. The farther out, the faster you will travel.

Teleport Moving: in the same "NAVIGATION" panel, you'll notice a box for both the x and the y axis, as well as a green "Teleport!" button. This allows you to type the x and y axis of where you want to go, and quickly arrive there by clicking the teleport button! Texting and teleporting is not permitted!

NOTE: another useful means of teleporting is to "JOIN" another online member. In the chat, type /join Username, or click their name in the list of users to open a "Join on Map" button. This will instantly jump you to their current location, and you will suddenly be right next to each other to collaborate!

Zoom Options: zooming in and out is easy! You can use your mouse wheel or a laptop track pad by "pinching." As well as physical methods, there are +/- buttons to zoom incrementally, and a sliding track under the joystick which slides back and forth. All of these methods will zoom in and out of the whiteboard.

NOTE: your mouse becomes your "focus" while zooming by wheel and pinch; your last pan-target becomes the zoom focus when using the slider or the +/- buttons.

Share Coords: your x/y axis coordinates are updated live, in real-time. "Share Coords" will create a link that jumps to your current coordinates and can be shared across the web. Those with no account will auto-login as a guest. A {click-teleport} button replaces links inside the chat and textnotes.

Copy Coords: this is better for things that happen inside the world which do not need a direct link. If you want to compile a list, or write a blog post that includes static, text-only coordinates to certain things, "159,667x 159,772y" is exactly what you'll copy in plain text. The share link is more powerful!

Your Profile
▼ scroll as needed

Your profile is shown in two places on The Node World: in a small, meta-data type card on the map, and the profile tab in the social panel. To set your "profile card coordinates," use the button under the "Bookmarks" top navigation link. Your profile card must be at least 25,000x and 25,000y to avoid profile clutter near 0x 0y.

You have no time limit, but once you do place your card, it becomes the permanent home. Profile cards are not objects that can be moved without staff intervention, so please take your time in deciding where you want to place it. This will display a small profile card on the map. When clicked, opens the social panel profile view.

Editing: to edit your profile, use the account menu in the top navigation and click the "Edit Profile" button. The standard profile layout comes with basic information as well as three photos. If you are more adventurous, you may use the code editor to write an HTML5, CSS and inline JavaScript template.

Viewing: to view your profile, use the "view profile" option. This will allow you to view the current state of your profile, which is helpful when coding a custom one. To view another user's profile, use the world search bar, click their name in the chat user list, or send /profile Username.

World Objects
▼ scroll as needed

"Objects" are the items you place around the map for other people to see and interact with. When you create an object, you are the "owner," and you are the only person who can lock it, unlock it or delete it. If you decide to leave your object unlocked, anybody can move it to another area or resize it, however, cannot delete it.

To create a new object for the map, use the "Create" button located in the top navigation area. This menu will allow you to upload a video, create a photo by URL or upload, post a doodle, create an HTML page/widget, add a textnote, or post a blog entry. All of these objects are subject to the Community Rules & Guidelines.

Photos: photos can be created by uploading or using a URL to a photo hosted elsewhere. They can be resized by right clicking once placed and using the free transform stretch tools. Holding SHIFT while dragging a corner will keep the photo ratio constrained. The red glowing bubble is a rotation handle.

NOTE: photos can be uploaded as original artwork. If you are attaching or uploading a photo that is your art, and would like it displayed on TheWorldNode.net's gallery, check the artwork box and give your piece a title and SEO tags. This will also make it "searchable" inside the world's search bar.

Videos: videos are currently by upload only and have a maximum of 250MB. Videos can also be resized and rotated by right clicking and using the free transform tools / red glowing rotate handle. Privacy is a main focus of mine. If a reliable and privacy-friendly video host comes along, this will be looked into.

Doodles: doodles can be created using the drawing pad and all of it's tools: text, shapes, lines, brushes and a full color picker. Your doodle will be transparent against the light blue whiteboard. If you'd like a background, use the fill bucket to create a background for bright colors to be vibrant and visible!

NOTE: these doodles are your created art pieces! Just like uploading a photo of your artwork, you can check the artwork box before placing to give your doodle a title and SEO information. This will add your doodle to TheWorldNode.net's gallery, and also make it searchable within the world search bar.

HTML Code: custom HTML pages can be written for creative posters, HTML5 widgets, display signs — whatever you'd like as long as you are following the community guidelines. HTML pages cannot contain embedded videos unless they are private, tracker-free and have no ads (most services are blocked).

NOTE: JavaScript is allowed inside of the HTML document (which will be displayed on the canvas as an iFrame). However, only inline JavaScript is permitted. JavaScript usage is not permitted to call outside sources to avoid malicious activity, but enabled at a level to help you continue being creative!

Word Magnets: word magnets are individual words that operate just like a set of refrigerator word magnets! They can be created using the /create command. Each space creates a new word, making the full command like so: /create magnetone magnettwo magnetthree magnetfour. Any punctuation can be independent, or connected to the word.

Textnotes: textnotes are designed to be small to medium sized pieces of writing — not short enough to be created using word magnets, and not long enough to be a blog post. This is ideal for quick-notes, similar to sticky notes. Great for making little comments, paired with bold, italic, underline and color.

Literature: these are full-length blog entries which show only meta-data on the map object. The literature portal comes equipped with an entire rich editor system for font style, font colors and heading tags H1-H5, as well as an entire library system to help manage saved drafts or editing published pieces.

NOTE: literature entries are automatically drawn to TheWorldNode.net's writing portal, but focuses on privacy by only showing your display name, chosen SEO tags and the date posted. Providing personal information inside of your blog post is entirely your choice, and it is not against the rules to do so.

READING: literature objects act a bit differently than the others. The "card" which contains the meta-data operates just as any other object, and is searchable through the world's search bar. To read the full post, the object must be clicked, which opens a "reading" page in the social panel.

Object Controls: to use controls such as lock, unlock, delete, edit, view creator's profile, etc, you may right click the object to view options. Right clicking an object will allow you to lock/unlock/resize/delete your own objects, and will allow you to move or resize unlocked objects you do not own.

Moving Objects: the easiest way to move a single object is by right clicking and selecting the "move" option. If you wish to move a group of objects, use the "Select" tool and highlight objects like you would on your desktop. Click to drag, joystick and teleport are all available, and clicking "Move!" will drop them.

Reporting Objects: to report an object, right click and use the "Report" link. This will ask you for details about the object and why it is being reported. Once submitted, an immediate overlay will cover the object with a "View at Own Risk" while it waits for a staff member to review for a decision.

Community Rules
▼ scroll as needed

I created The Node World to be an open, creative, social space for everybody who uses it. This means that we need to work together to keep it a friendly, PG-13ish rated atmosphere. Most of these rules fall under common sense, but it is strongly advised that you read and understand all of the community guidelines.

#1) Respect is Non-Negotiable

While adult-theme objects and conversation is permitted, what is not permitted is attacking other users. Disagree openly and debate naturally, but keep in mind there is a right way and a wrong way. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, religious hatred, or any content that targets a person or group based on who they are is not permitted in chat, world objects, profile content or anywhere else.

#2) Adult-Themes Are Permitted

This feels pretty standard, but it must be written: adult-themes are permitted on every aspect of The Node World when used in a reasonable manner. For example, swearing is fine; a photo with cleavage is fine; expressing adult views is fine. What is not fine is sexually explicit imagery, graphic nudity, pornography of any nature, or content that exists purely to shock or offend others.

#3) Staff Intervention / Moderation

At the end of the day, administrators and moderators will make the final call. We're going to leave this a bit open-ended for the time being and just lay out the two basic rules: be a decent human being and don't use this creative space to post disgusting things. Your account status is dependent on how you act. I do firmly believe that people I give power to will have no reason to abuse it.

However, if you do feel you've been removed from the community at an unjust level, you may use the contact form to get in touch with me, and I will review what happened and make a decision. Mistakes do happen, and I am more than willing to look into each situation on a case by case scenario to figure out what happened.

Terms & Privacy
▼ scroll as needed

When I created this little world, I fell in love with the idea of ad-free and privacy focused, and that's what I focused on with each area inside of the world. There are zero ads, there is minimal information collected, and nothing is shared with or sold to third parties for any form of monetization.

The Node World (https://www.theworldnode.com and https://www.theworldnode.net) are both owned and operated by only myself, Burke I. Zizzi, under ZiZZiSTUDiO Productions. The entirety of this application was built only by me with AI-assistance. There is no AI integrated into ZiZZiSTUDiO, TheWorldNode.com, or TheWorldNode.Net. However, there are parts of The Node World that were extremely complex puzzles in which Claude Code was used to configure.

This entire HTML5 application uses no third parties and was built entirely in Sublime Text Editor on Ubuntu Desktop 24.04. This was built with 100% hand-written and AI-assisted HTML, CSS, PHP and vanilla (plain) JavaScript. No React, no frameworks, no plugins, no analytics and no third parties whom may potentially collect data. Everything is in-house, keeping your data private and secure.

Below, you will see a comprehensive list of the data we collect, when we collect it, and what it is used for. To keep it simple if you wish to stop reading: we collect basic information about you upon creating an account, small technical information about your device and connection, and absolutely nothing that can be used to personally identify you in any way, shape, or form. The basic things we do collect are standard for security and development.

Collected Information

Your IP Address: whether you are logged in as a guest, or you have an account, your IP address is recorded for security purposes. Please note that your IP address is public anywhere you go on the web and cannot be used to identify you.

Email Address: if you decide to create an account, we ask you to provide us with an email to verify you are not a robot. Email updates may be sent to you in the future, which will provide an "Unsubscribe" button to stop receiving.

Public Name: if you decide to create an account, we will ask for a public display name, your "username." This will be displayed publicly within various parts of The Node World, as well as TheNodeWorld.Net should you create content.

Profile Information: profiles are filled with questionnaires, as well as a slot for three (3) photo URLs or uploads. Any information you provide or photos you upload is at your will. These areas are not needed, required or mandatory.

Cookies & Session Data

A session is created when you login, and will remain active until you sign out or close the window. If you decide to "Stay Logged In," a cookie is placed to let you easily hop right back. This is not a harmful cookie, or a cookie that tracks and/or collects any data. This is simply to tell your browser that it's okay to keep your session active and avoiding the need to keep logging in.

Account & Information Deletion

You are in complete control of this. Under your account settings, you will see an option to delete your account. When you do this, everything you've created, written or posted will be deleted also. Your objects can be deleted at your own will without deleting your entire account by using the object deletion tool. There is not an object type that cannot be deleted as long as you are the creator.

Contact Form Policy

Should you need to use the contact form, the information requested is a name to address you by, your email address for a reply, a subject/reason for the message, and the body of the message. When you send a message, your IP address is recorded for security purposes and added to the bottom of your message.

Your IP address is not saved or stored in our database, however, it will be saved for as long as the email is not deleted.
